I invite you to come and explore the Pope’s Palace. This monument is the city’s emblem. It stands at the heart of Avignon’s golden age, thanks to the popes who built it and transformed the city.
It’s impossible to visit Avignon and miss this colossal stone structure, which is the largest Gothic palace in the world. I grew up right next to this palace. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by this work of art left behind by the popes.
Ever since I became a tour guide, I’ve loved sharing my passion for this building with as many people as possible. That’s why I’m offering you a tour of the Pope’s palace. But bear in mind, you really need to take your time exploring this gem. Here, there are no rushed 1½-hour tours where you rush from one room to the next without really taking in the place. I’m offering a 3-hour tour so you can really soak up the atmosphere and uncover every secret hidden in the nooks and crannies of this immense palace. What’s more, I’m offering a tour with a maximum of just 7 people, so you’ll have plenty of time to appreciate the discoveries you’ll make inside the palace.
Itinerary
The tour I’m proposing is divided into three parts.
The first part takes place in front of the Avignon Opera House. I’ll give you a brief introduction to the city’s 2,500-year history. You’ll discover that Avignon has a rich and complex history dating back well before the arrival of the popes.
We’ll then head towards the Pope’s Palace. From there, you’ll be able to admire the gigantic and majestic façade of the Pope’s Palace. In fact, before we go inside the palace, you’ll need to know why the popes came to settle in Avignon. I’ll explain all that to you before we step inside the largest Gothic palace in the world.
Finally, we’ll go inside the palace to explore every nook and cranny and discover the treasures hidden within. We’ll take our time to admire the power and wealth of the 14th-century popes. We’ll walk through the various rooms and also visit the garden.
This tour gives you a comprehensive and in-depth insight into the 14th century – a crucial period for Avignon, as well as for the papacy and Europe.
